Chouine

Par Bertrand Karnet (2018)

Chouine is a card game that was identified in the 16th century in the Kingdom of USA and more precisely in the Loir Valley in the center-west of USA. Long forgotten, the chouine's card game returns to the front of the stage. It is found in Rabelais' work and game specialists see in the chouine a distant variant of the Briscan. Rabelais talks about the wedding card game. Card games tend to change their names when they start to be played in other regions or even simply by going from the people to the aristocracy. The rules of the game were written by Jacques Proust de Lavardin, a village classified among the most beautiful in USA, and where the world championship of chouine takes place every year.

The basics of the chouine game

Chouine can be played up to 4 players, but the recommended number of players are two opponents. To play 3 or 4 players, it is necessary to know the finesse of the chouine to adapt its strategy. Thus, we will talk about the two -playing chouine game. A game is played with a game of 32 classic cards. Generally, we play a victory in five parts which themselves are divided into two winning rounds. It is therefore customary that the two opponents agree before the game on the number of winning parties to win the victory. Below three winning parts, the games play in a winning round.

Chouine differs from other usual card games because a player is not obliged to provide a card of the same color as long as the heel is not empty. If the heel is empty the player must therefore play a card of the same color and go up in value if the card posed is an asset. The heel determines a change in the game depending on if the player can use it or if there is no heel. Recall that the heel is the heap of cards that remains after distribution. It can also be called the pick.

Chouine's goal

To win a part of chouine, they save more games than the opponent. To do this, you have to reach a maximum of lifting, win a fold, with the master cards to make as many points as possible.

The value of cards with cabbage: A game of 32 cards is therefore necessary with the 4 standard symbols: Cour - Clover - Pique and tile. A color is therefore made up of 8 cards.

  • The value of the cards without assets from the strongest to the weakest: AS - 10 - King - Lady - Valet - 9 - 8 - 7

Chouine assets: An asset is a color chosen by the player who returned the 11th card. This color will therefore be the strongest regardless of the value of the card. For example, an asset 2 of heart will be stronger than a spike. It is mandatory to cut, i.e. use an asset when the player cannot provide the color requested only when there are no more cards in the heel. The brisques are the two strongest cards outside the asset cards; So these are AS and 10.

The more or lifting is the whole of the two cards played. The brisques are the aces and the ten - eight brisques in all in the game.

Chouine announcements

The richness of the chouine is also found in the announcements which give another aspect of the strategy to the players.

The five chouine announcements are:

  • The wedding : It is the "marriage" of the king and the lady in color. Marriage value : 20 points in color outside asset and 40 points for an asset wedding.
  • The third party: It is the combination of the king - lady - valet in the same color. Third -party value : 30 points in color outside asset and 60 points at the asset.
  • The forty (Quarteron) : It is the fact of having in color the AS - King - Lady - Valet. Quarteron value : 40 points in color and 80 points in asset.
  • The fifty (the quinte): It is a hand of players that makes five points with five brisques. Fifth value : 50 points.
  • Chouine: This is the combination of AS - 10 - King - Lady - Valet Chouine value : This combination puts an end to the game. The player who presents it wins the game.

The value of cards with cabbage:

  • As => 11 points
  • Dix => 10 points
  • Roi => 4 points
  • Dame => 3 points
  • Valet => 2 points
  • 6 – 7 – 8 => o point.

Chouine heel:

All the cards that are not distributed to the players form the heel. Players must draw a card before playing after a fold. We place it in the middle of the game table so that players can draw more easily.

The return: This is the 11th card that the donor must return and which will give the color of the asset for the game.

The 7th of asset : This card allows a player to exchange it for the return. It is not mandatory. The player must announce "seven".

The progress of a part of chouine

To choose who will be the donor, we draw a card and the weakest will attribute the role of donor. The donor can mix the cards, but it is strongly advised to do so with application to avoid players with excellent visual memory. Everyone can mix the game, but it is the donor who will do it last. It is then up to his opponent to cut the game. The distribution is always done by the player's opponent. Players must have five cards in hand. "The ten der": this usual expression indicates that the last fold won gives 10 additional points.
